a solo show at the International Studio and Curatorial Program

A Cielo Aperto is a project about controlled airspace. It is a site- specific installation based on classified maps of controlled airspace delineating, among other restricted and prohibited sites, the flight corridors used by military drones. The installation consists of wall projections of a single still image, a photograph of the sky and of a network of strings that cut through the space above the viewer’s head and cast shadows onto the walls. It acts as a sensorial three-dimensional counterpart to the photographs. The strings cast shadows that trace the drones’ corridors and the shapes of controlled airspace from the military map.  The effect is a particular sense of enclosure, the closing of the open sky.  It is in this contested space of freedom and power, of visible and invisible, that the project finds its conceptual ground. the installation is based on a classified maps of the Mediterranean sky  above Sicily.
